Directions

Start: Kirk Langley Church

A gentle walk through rolling fields on the edge of the Derbyshire Peaks, passing through Amber Valley, Derbyshire Dales and South Derbyshire, and touching part of the historic Bonnie Prince Charlie Walk.

1. With the church on your left, walk west along Church Lane for about 500 yards, passing Langley House. Ignore the first footpath on the right. As the road bends left, take the farm road to Nether Burrows and follow it for about a mile. Bear right before the farm, then after 200 yards bear left into the next yard. Turn right between the farmhouse and barn, then head diagonally left across the field into a small, wooded valley. Cross the stream using the stepping stones and continue uphill into a field.
   The bank here is dotted with holes belonging to a live badger sett. You may even notice the musky scent as you pass. Public awareness of sett locations helps deter illegal badger baiting.
   Keep the hedge on your left, then turn right uphill to enter the next field. Continue to a gate leading onto Burrows Lane.
2. Turn left and walk 300 yards to a bridleway gate on the left. Go through it and follow the field edge down to a wicket gate and footbridge.
3. Cross the bridge and climb the field with the fence on your left. Continue through the farm gate into a green lane between hedges. Follow this to a surfaced road and continue straight, passing a large house. Keep ahead until you meet Long Lane.
4. Turn right on Long Lane for a few yards, then left toward Lees. After half a mile you reach the village green, roughly halfway round the route. The Cow pub here offers food if needed.
5. From the green, take the left-hand road. Just past the house with a shooting themed weather vane, go through the stile on the right. Keep the hedge on your left, then where it bends right, go through a gate on the left. Head down the large rough field to a gap in the hedge, then across the next field to a wicket gate by the stream. Follow the stream to a footbridge.
6. Cross the bridge, then head across the next field with the pylon on your left and trees on your right, aiming for an oak tree in the far hedge. Go through the gap, cross another footbridge, and continue to the next field. Bear right aiming for the stag headed oak. Cross a stile and bridge, continue diagonally to another stile, then cross a small field to reach a narrow stile onto the road. Turn left towards Radbourne.
   Radbourne Hall stands on the hill to your right.
7. At the junction bear right and look for a stile opposite the lane to Radbourne Church. Cross the field to a gap in the electric fence, then continue to the far right corner for another stile. Cross the next field toward the stile at the edge of the wood. In the following field bear right downhill to the opposite corner, cross the stile and join the road. Turn left to the junction.
8. Opposite the junction, go over the stile and walk slightly left through a small plantation and gate. Continue into the next field and aim towards a gate and stile in the far corner. Keep the hedge on your right until you find a narrow gap leading into the next field. Head straight up the field to the fingerpost on Long Lane. Cross carefully and follow the path with the hedge on your left, crossing four stiles. As you approach Kirk Langley, take the stile on the left into the next field and head downhill towards the house. Cross the stile into the garden, then the next stile into the lane. Turn right to return to the church.
